Microsoft, along with Vulcan, NIKE, RealNetworks, Group Health Cooperative and Concur, say that Washington’s failure to recognize gay marriage has gone on long enough.

They have called for legislators to pass the two gay marriage bills SB 6239 and HB 2516 recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples currently circulating through their chambers.

Microsoft’s general counsel Brad Smith writes:

At Microsoft, we pride ourselves on our products and services, our brand, and our global reach. But unquestionably, our employees are our greatest asset.

As other states recognize marriage equality, Washington’s employers are at a disadvantage if we cannot offer a similar, inclusive environment to our talented employees, our top recruits and their families. Employers in the technology sector face an unprecedented national and global competition for top talent. Despite progress made in recent years with domestic partnership rights, same-sex couples in Washington still hold a different status from their neighbors. Marriage equality in Washington would put employers here on an equal footing with employers in the six other states that already recognize the committed relationships of same-sex couples – Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. This in turn will help us continue to compete for talent.

Add Microsoft’s explanation to the list of arguments for marriage equality: Discrimination is bad for tech businesses.

This is true regardless which group of people discrimination targets.Companies can’t hire the best people, and the best people can’t do their best work. And in the end, everybody loses.

Samsung And Google Postpone Huge Android Announcement Out Of Respect For Steve Jobs

Steve Kovach wrote in interesting article in the Business Inside, you can see he piece here.

STOP THE PRESS: A Google spokesperson said “We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing.”

Are you MAD, this is not respect this is political and social correctness of the lowest order.

Steve Jobs’s is tragic for his family and friends. But do Samsung and Google really think his family and friends will give one hoot for any news about some HUGE Android announcement? If Steve Jobs could he would be falling over with laughter.

Get grip guys, if you have an announcement then make it!

I you are holding back due to some strange notion that it will make converts out of all the iPhone lovers holding vigils, then you are so wrong!

About the only way you will do that would be if the announcement said your next Android would look like Number Six (plaid by Tricia Helfer) from Battlestar Galactica.

On the other hand if your development flopped and you can’t make the announcement then be honest about it. Don’t try and hide behind a man’s death.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs dies aged 56

Steve Jobs has died age 56, Steve Jobs announced he was suffering from pancreatic cancer in 2004.

I have never been a Mac fan, and I love my Windows Phone 7 over my old iPhone. But the death of any one transcends the politics of technological preferences.

Steve Jobs death will feel like the end of the world to his family and friends so I give my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

However let’s not to turn a family tragedy into a media circus. Even as I put fingers to keyboard millions are dying from war, famine, poverty, ecological disaster, and thousands of manmade plagues, in far worse ways. Many of those unfortunates will die alone, unloved, uncared for; their passing will be an unregistered statistic in a morgue if they are lucky.

Steve Jobs, had a good life, he made a name for himself, doing what he loved, how he liked, and with more freedom and money than most of us will ever dream of. His passion granted him the freedom to give his family a good education, freedom, and a good life; in short his life was not so bad.

Let his family and friends mourn in peace, in their own time, and their own way.

Microsoft does not give 9000 free refurbished iPads, but…..

Unlike Apple, Microsoft has not gifted 9000 free refurbished iPad, see my blog “Charity or Self Interest? Apple has giving 9,000 free iPads to Teach for America Charity“. But what it has done is a great deal more for Education, Non-profit Organisations, and Humanitarian Response.

UK Debt Payments

We have been told that we are living in an age of austerity, one in which we must all tighten our belts and not ask for more.

That leads me to a question. WHO ARE WE IN DEBT TO? No one seems to want to say.

Differing reports say that the UK debt will be between £1.1 trillion to £2 trillion by 2011. Now I grant you that is a pretty scary number.

The UK Prime Minister David Cameron said that he wants us to pay this debt back as fast as possible, that is after all the reason for such a breadth and depth of spending cuts happening as fast as they are trying for.

That lordly figure of £1.1 trillion to £2 trillion it sounds familiar to me. OH yes now I remember where I have heard it before.

The UK has 53 billionaires, and 284,000 millionaires, between them they are worth £1.28 trillion give or take various interest rates tax loop holes, and things such as “non-domicile” status such as the Conservative Party deputy chairman Lord Michael Ashcroft who has so generously not over stress the hard-worked UK tax office with his £3.4 million is unpaid offshore tax.

Now keep in mind that the £1.1 trillion to £2 trillion is the amount for 2011. If we pay the debt back now it’s going to be under £1 trillion a vast number I grant you.  I think that between the 53 billionaires, and 284,000 millionaires, the big UK companies, and anyone who gets over £100,000.00 we could break the UK Debt, and bring the UK books back into black before this year is out, without killing the NHS and other icons on the UK.

I can hear many a voice calling me mad, commie, or crack pot. It’s true I am not a mathematician, with specialties in macroeconomics, who has great insight into the economy, but then again those gods of the abacus helped to get us into this mess.

I grant you that the bottom figure of £100k is arbitrary; it would seem to me that £100k is a pretty fine wage to take home, perhaps better brains than I would come up with a higher number or even a lower one.

My proposition is not a permanent change to our way of life, just a quick short sharp shock; one that I think would not disrupt the way of life in the UK for the majority of people.

Every one of those top earners who give to the country could be made heroes, perhaps with some kind of tax break or other incentive, if more was needed other than being the saviour of the UK.

We could have a national tithing of every person’s financial wealth. I have heard it said that the Prime Ministers that their job is the best job in the world and they would do it for nothing. Well they don’t do it for nothing; they do it for £198,661.00 and an assured job for life after, plus a great pension.

Perhaps the Prime Minister you could start by tithing his wage above £100,000 to the tax man. With him leading the country like a Churchillian hero, showing us all the true Dunkirk spirit he could lead us off the beach of financial despair. I know that tithing his wage from £100K and above might seem a lot, but how much would you give to save the UK?

Forgive the World Debt

The world debt could be forgiven!

Why? Well why not?

We are all in it up to our collected ears in big deep dodo of world debt.

The only ones who are making a killing are the bankers, oh weight, they are always the ones on top; except just before we bailed their collective debt heavy banks out of the mess they let build up.

Back in 01/17/2005 Gordon Brown the then Treasury chief called for the wealthy nations and international institutions to write off Africa’s debt, saying debts incurred by past generations are keeping the continent poor.

Well the west did not do that! But now the west is in debt. So let’s play the good guy, lets wipe out Africa’s debt, and at the same time wipe out ever ones else’s debt including out own debt, then we can start a clean slate.

Sounds like a mix of generosity and self-greed, just what the bankers need.
